State Senator Michael E. Hastings and Executive Director of Together We Cope Kathy Straniero toured and discussed much needed improvements to Together We Cope facility after the tragic fire.TINLEY PARK – Thanks for a $250,000 state grant secured by State Senator Michael E. Hastings, Together We Cope, a vital nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting families in temporary crisis, will be fully operational by the end of July.

"Together We Cope is a cornerstone of support for families facing unexpected challenges. Ensuring their full operational capacity means countless individuals will continue to receive the crucial assistance they need to regain stability,” said Hastings (D-Frankfort). “I am proud to have played a part in supporting such an essential organization."

This exciting development comes following a shortfall in insurance proceeds needed to cover essential repairs.

Founded in 1989, Together We Cope serves residents across 27 south suburban communities, providing a comprehensive array of services aimed at preventing homelessness and ensuring families can meet their basic needs. The organization’s mission is to offer a hand-up, not a handout, through a variety of supports including:

  • Food Pantry: Providing groceries to individuals and families in need.
  • Clothing Assistance: Offering gently used clothing and household items.
  • Financial Assistance: Helping with rent, mortgage and utility payments to prevent evictions and shut-offs.
  • Resource Referral: Connecting clients with additional community resources and services.

“We are immensely grateful for Senator Michael Hastings’ efforts in securing this grant,” said Together We Cope's Executive Director Kathy Straniero. “It ensures we can continue to serve our community effectively and make a real difference in the lives of those in need.”

Together We Cope thrives on the generosity of the community, relying on donations, volunteers, and local partnerships to fulfill its mission. Their thrift store, Nu2u Resale Shop, further supports their programs, with proceeds directly funding client services.

Hastings is excited to see Together We Cope continue its impactful work in light of the secured funding and almost completed repairs, which includes providing stability to families during their time of need.
